Spring Sniffles: Deciphering Allergies vs. Illness in Children

Springtime is a season of renewal and beauty, but it also brings along pollen and the top three reasons families find themselves reaching out to their pediatricians: skin rashes, runny noses, and itchy eyes.

Discerning whether these symptoms stem from allergies or an underlying illness can be particularly challenging. Many parents, myself included, navigate through periods where it feels like our children are bouncing from one illness to another, leaving us puzzled about the root cause of these symptoms. However, I'm here to offer some guidance and insights that can assist you in distinguishing between allergic reactions and signs of sickness.

  1. Skin Rashes: Rashes triggered by allergies, including reactions to hay fever or exposure to plants that cause allergies, typically manifest as extensive areas of redness, itchiness, or eczema. These reactions are closely linked to contact with particular allergens such as pollen. On the other hand, rashes due to illness may be accompanied by other systemic symptoms such as fever, lethargy, or a sore throat, suggesting a more comprehensive immune response to an infection.
  2. Runny Nose: A runny nose caused by allergies is typically clear and accompanied by sneezing, itchiness, and nasal congestion, often worsening with exposure to allergens like pollen. On the other hand, a runny nose stemming from a viral or bacterial infection might start with clear discharge but then progress to thicker, possibly colored mucus. This type of runny nose can also be part of a broader array of symptoms including fever, a productive cough, overall fatigue, and additional indications of being unwell.
  3. Itchy Eyes: Itchy, watery, and red eyes are hallmark signs of allergic conjunctivitis and can become particularly pronounced during the high pollen seasons of spring. Typically, these symptoms manifest simultaneously in both eyes and lack any infection markers like pus or crusting. Infectious conjunctivitis, commonly known as pink eye, often starts in one eye before spreading to the other. Alongside the noticeable redness, the discharge tends to be thicker and pus-like, often accompanied by yellow crusting.

Navigating these symptoms, especially in the overlapping seasons of common colds and allergy peaks, requires a keen observation of accompanying signs and possibly consulting with a pediatrician for accurate diagnosis and treatment. Knowing whether the symptoms are allergy-driven or indicative of an illness can greatly influence the management approach, from the use of antihistamines and allergy avoidance strategies to possibly requiring antibiotics or other medications for infections. As a parent, I understand how overwhelming it can be to navigate your child's health issues. You're not alone in this struggle; many of us are right there with you, trying our best under similar circumstances. Remember, every effort you make, no matter how small it may seem to you, makes a world of difference through your child's eyes.
